TIPS ON EATING OUT
We Americans now eat nearly half of our meals away from home. The average restaurant meals may contain almost an entire day’s worth of calories and fat. Here are some healthy tips for eating out:
· Choose pasta dishes with tomato sauce rather than cream sauce.
- Ask for condiments, sauces and salad dressing on the side.
- Stop eating before you feel stuffed.
- Stay away from words like “sautéed,” “ fried,” “ in sauce” or “smothered.”
- Restaurants typically serve larger than recommended portion sizes. Ask for a carryout container before you begin eating. Plan on taking half the portion home.
- Choose items that are baked, broiled, steamed or poached.
- Drink water, unsweetened tea or diet soft drinks instead of regular soft drinks or alcoholic beverages.
- Order sandwiches with mustard instead of mayonnaise.
