Your Dental Insurance Options

Group Dental frequently comes bundled with Group Health insurance. It can be offered on a purely voluntary basis in which the premiums are fully paid by the employee, or as a more traditional plan, where employees have the ability to choose their own dentist and receive more flexibility and higher coverage levels for dental work. Types of plans you can opt to offer include:

  • Preferred-Provider Organization (PPO): This plan covers your and your family’s preventive care and basic services such as oral exams, routine cleanings, and X-rays. You can choose any dentist in- or out-of-network, although it’s important to note that the costs will be higher with out-of-network dentists.
  • Dental Health Maintenance Organization (DHMO): This plan also covers routine exams, X-rays, and cleanings. It consists of a network of dentists who agree to provide many services at low or no cost.
  • Prevention and Minor-Restorative: Preventive and basic dental services, such as oral exams, routine cleanings, and X-rays, are included under this type of plan. It also covers emergency care for pain relief, non-surgical extractions, and fillings. There are typically low deductibles and no waiting period involved to obtain the preventive care services in in this plan.
